OAKLAND, Calif., July 4 (UPI) -- Jay Payton's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday gave the Oakland Athletics a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Bobby Crosby walked, advanced to second on Frank Thomas' walk and ran over catcher Vance Wilson to score on Payton's line drive to right field.

Mark Kotsay also scored for the Athletics, who won their second straight.
Wilson homered for the Tigers only run.
Oakland rookie Justin Verlander gave up one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.
Fernando Rodney (4-3) got the loss after giving up the winning run. Chad Gaudin (1-2) pitched a perfect 10th for the win.
