MADRID, June 29 (UPI) -- Prince Felipe, heir to the Spanish throne, has apologized for Spanish World Cup fans' booing during the French national anthem.
Spanish fans were heard to boo "La Marseillaise" as it was played before the match started on Tuesday, EFE reported.
France eliminated Spain, 3-1.
The prince apologized formally to Franz Beckenbauer, president of the World Cup organizing committee.
"This is not normal, it's unsporting in a World Cup and more so when it is the anthem of a rival." Beckenbauer said.
