MLB: Washington 9, Baltimore 5

BALTIMORE, June 25 (UPI) -- Royce Clayton hit a three-run double in the fifth inning Sunday afternoon to help Washington beat the Baltimore Orioles, 9-5.

With the win, Washington (33-44) averted a three-game sweep.

Marlon Byrd, who blasted a solo home run, had two runs, three hits, and two RBI; Marlon Anderson hit an RBI single; while Daryle Ward had one run, two hits, and two RBI for the Nationals, who broke a five-game losing streak.

In six innings, winner Livan Hernandez (6-8) gave up three runs and six hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Jeff Conine, who drove in two runs; hit a solo homer; Corey Patterson had two runs and two hits; and Javy Lopez drove in a run for the Orioles (35-42), who have five losses in their last nine games.

Losing pitcher Daniel Cabrera (4-5) yielded five hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
