Jeff Gordon win Nextel race at Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif., June 25 (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon took the checkered flag Sunday at the Nextel Cup's/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma, Calif.

He crossed the finish line 1.250 seconds ahead of Ryan Newman to win the race for a record fifth time.

It was Gordon's first win of the season and the 74th of his Cup career.

"I didn't know if we were ever going to win another one of these races," Gordon said. "I knew this team was something special, we just hadn't had a chance to really show it."

Terry Labonte was third, followed by Greg Biffle in fourth and Kurt Busch in fifth.

Carl Edwards, Jeff Burton, Elliott Sadler, Boris Said and Jimmy Johnson completed the top 10.

In the points race, Johnson is first with 2,434; Matt Kenseth is second with 2,333; Kasey Kahne (2,121) is third; Mark Martin (2,113) fourth; and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (2,105) is fifth.
