Indians ship Jason Johnson to Boston

CLEVELAND, June 21 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Indians Wednesday traded pitcher Jason Johnson to Boston for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

The trade occurred after Cleveland designated the 32-year-old Johnson for assignment on Tuesday.

In 77 innings this season, the 6-foot-6, 225-pound veteran right-hander, who has pitched in parts of 10 seasons with Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, Detroit and Cleveland, is 3-8 with a 5.96 ERA. He has a 7.38 ERA in his last 10 starts and was 1-8 in his last nine decisions.

Boston was desperate for veteran starters because right-hander Matt Clement and southpaw David Wells on the disabled list.

With the Tigers last season, Johnson hurled at least six innings in 25 starts.

To make room for Johnson on its active roster, Boston optioned right-hander Kyle Snyder to Triple-A Pawtucket, effective after Tuesday night's game against Washington.
