FRANKFURT, Germany, June 17 (UPI) -- Deco scored a goal and Cristiano Ronaldo added a score off a penalty shot Saturday, lifting Portugal to a 2-0 World Cup victory over Iran.
The victory assured Portugal of advancing to the Round of 16 in the World Cup, while Iran was locked out of any chance of moving on from Group D. The other Group D spot to the elimination round has yet to be determined but Mexico, which has a large advantage, and Angola.
Portugal dominated play and allowed Iran few chances to grab the advantage. Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo faced just five shots -- one on goal -- in the game.
The Iranian defense played well, also, keeping the team in the game until the 63rd minute when Luis Figo set up Deco in the penalty area and the midfielder drilled a shot inside the left post.
Portugal sealed the game in the 79th minute when Figo was fouled near the goal. Ronaldo took the penalty and drove a shot into the left side of the goal as Iran goalkeeper Ebrahim Mirzapour guessed wrong on the try.
Group D round robin play winds up Wednesday with Portugal playing Mexico and Iran playing Angola.
