Orioles' Gibbons goes back to the DL

TORONTO, June 14 (UPI) -- Because of his sprained right knee, Baltimore outfielder Jay Gibbons Wednesday was put back on the 15-day disabled list.

Gibbons was on the DL from May 27-June 12 with the same injury. He was activated before Monday's game at Toronto.

Both Gibbons and the team said on the Orioles' Web site that his return had been premature.

"I was praying for them not to hit me the ball in the outfield, because I just couldn't move," I told (Manager Sam Perlozzo). "You can't play that way (and) I can't risk it out there."

Gibbons had three hits in seven at-bats on Monday and Tuesday.

Gibbons, who was a 14th-round draft pick by the Blue Jays in 1998, is batting .274 with 10 home runs and 29 RBI in 190 at-bats.

The knee ailment forced him to leave Tuesday night's game in the third inning.

"(Doctors) tell me it could be six weeks before I play again."
