Rain washes out play at Champions event

CONCORD, Mass., June 9 (UPI) -- Friday's first round of the Champions Tour's Bank of America Championship at Concord, Mass., was postponed Friday due to rain.

The course at the Nashawtuc Country Club has been soaked with nearly 20 inches of rain in the past few weeks -- including three inches in the last two days -- leading officials to declare the course unplayable.

"After inspecting the golf course (Friday) morning, our staff has made the determination that it is unplayable and will be that way for the rest of the day," said Champions Tour Tournament Director Ben Nelson. "There's quite a bit of standing water out there and no place for the water to go at the present time. Our plan is still to have a 54-hole tournament and finish the event late on Sunday afternoon."

This is the first time weather has affected a Champions event since the 2005 Bayer Advantage Classic in Kansas City, which had to be shortened to 36 holes.
