Rooney leaves hospital after foot scan

MANCHESTER, England, June 7 (UPI) -- English soccer star Wayne Rooney, who had his injured foot scanned at a hospital in Manchester, will know soon if he will be able to play in the World Cup.

The 20-year-old striker spent 25 minutes at the clinic, accompanied by Britain's soccer association executive director David Davies and team doctors, reports the BBC. Rooney had earlier told England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson that he expects to play in Germany.

"I am confident and he is 300 percent confident he will play," said Eriksson.

If the doctors cannot agree on Rooney's fitness, an independent consultant may be asked to decide, the report said. If he is unable to play in World Cup by the deadline of Friday, the place may go to Jermain Defoe.

Sky News reported Rooney injured his foot more than a month ago while playing against Chelsea. The report said even if Rooney passes the fitness test, he is unlikely to play until the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
