Karlsson wins the Wales Open

NEWPORT, Wales, June 4 (UPI) -- Despite a 2-over 71 on Sunday, Sweden's Robert Karlsson won the Wales Open Golf Tournament by three shots over England's Paul Broadhurst.

Karlsson -- who shot 61 and 63 in the first two rounds, setting records with his 36- and 54-hole scores -- finished 16-under 260.

"When I saw the leader-board on the 17th hole, I had a big smile on my face," the 6-foot-5 inch Karlsson admitted. "It was trickier out there today with the wind and all of a sudden the greens didn't seem so big. It was hard being so far in front and spending each evening trying not to think too much about it. It's too easy to get ahead of yourself."

Broadhurst was 13-under 263 after a 68 in the final round. Spain's Jose-Filipe Lima (64) was third at 12-under 264.

Colin Montgomerie of Scotland finished fourth after a closing 67. He was 11-under 265.
