MLB: Detroit 3, Cleveland 1

DETROIT, May 27 (UPI) -- Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run homer in the first inning Saturday night to help Detroit beat Cleveland, 3-1, for its eighth straight victory.

Placido Polanco three hits and one RBI; Curtis Granderson had one run and one hit; and Chris Shelton had two hits for the Tigers (35-14).

Detroit, which has baseball's best record, has won 15 of its last 16 games.

Winner Justin Verlander (7-3) gave up one run and seven hits in seven innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Todd Jones earned his 16th save.

Grady Sizemore smacked his 9th home run in the fourth inning; Ronny Belliard had three hits; while both Travis Hafner and Aaron Boone had two hits for the Indians (23-25).

Cleveland has lost three of its last four games.

Loser Paul Byrd fell to 4-4.
