CHICAGO, May 28 (UPI) -- In a bizarre and high-scoring contest Sunday afternoon, Atlanta outlasted the Chicago Cubs, 13-12, in 11 innings.
Atlanta got its winning run when Marcus Giles hit an RBI single. The hit came after Cubs' third baseman Aramis Ramirez lost a pop fly in the sun by Atlanta's Ryan Langerhans -- and the ball hit the top of Ramirez's head.
The Braves hit a record eight home runs -- and blew a 4-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. Starter John Smoltz gave up eight runs and 10 hits in six-plus innings.
Edgar Renteria and Adam LaRoche both homered twice; while Langerhans, Giles, Andruw Jones and Brayan Pena all homered once for the Braves, who are 27-23.
Neifi Perez had four RBI, while Jacques Jones drove in two runs for the Cubs (18-31).
The winner was Oscar Villarreal (7-0). Kenny Ray got his second save.
The loser was Scott Eyre (0-1).
