Riggs wns Coca-Cola 600 pole position

CONCORD, N.C., May 26 (UPI) -- Scott Riggs of Evernham Racing Thursday won the pole for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.

His No.10 Dodge circled the 1 1/2-mile circuit in 28.744 seconds (187.865 mph.) The pole victory was Riggs' first of the season and second of his Nextel Cup career.

"I'm really proud of everyone on this Valvoline/Stanley Tools team," he said. "The track came around to us, we got a late draw. I'm just proud of everybody."

Starting on the front row with Riggs will be teammate Jeremy Mayfield who ran a second-best time of 28.832 seconds.

Series points leader and defending Coca-Cola 600 winner Jimmie Johnson (28.931) and J.J. Yeley (28.999) make up row two.

Other drivers and their starting positions are Matt Kenseth (6th), Greg Biffle (7th), Kasey Kahne (9th), Jeff Burton (11th), Kevin Harvick (12th), Jeff Gordon (13th), Ryan Newman (18th), Mark Martin (21st), Tony Stewart (32nd) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (34th).
