CHICAGO, May 26 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs catcher Michael Barrett was given a 10-game suspension Friday for starting a brawl during a game with the Chicago White Sox.
White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson was given a 5-game suspension and third base coach Joey Cora suspended for two games, Major League Baseball announced. All three were also fined undisclosed amounts, while White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was fined but not suspended.
The longtime rivalry between the two teams erupted into open warfare last Saturday when Pierzynski plowed into Barrett at home plate at U.S. Cellular Field. While Pierzynski's maneuver was legal, Barrett got angry and punched him.
Barrett told The Chicago Tribune that he plans to appeal, which would delay the suspension. The catcher is one of the Cubs top hitters.
