"I made my decision on Thursday evening with my doctor and my coach," Pierce told the BBC. "I'm not competitive yet."

Pierce reportedly thought about retiring before the 2005 French Open, but reached the final. She won the French Open, the second leg of the sport's Grand Slam in 2000, and reached the title match last year and in 1994.

Overall, she has 18 WTA titles, including Wimbledon in 1998 and 2004, the Australian Open in 2002 and 2005, and the U.S. Open in 2002.

Also on the sidelines is two-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams, who has withdrawn from both the French Open Wimbledon because of an on-going right knee ailment.
