MLB: Washington 8, Houston 5

WASHINGTON, May 25 (UPI) -- The improving Washington Nationals scored six runs in the first two innings Thursday afternoon on the way to an 8-5 win over Houston.

The Nationals have won their last three games.

Jose Vidro hit a three-run homer off Houston starter Andy Pettitte in the second inning. Ryan Zimerman had one hit and three RBI while both Alfonso Soriano and Royce Clayton had two hits and two runs each to help the Nationals improve to 19-29, Washington's fifth win in its last six games.

Winning pitcher Tony Armas Jr. (5-2) scattered four runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. Chad Codero earned his seventh save.

Former National Preston Wilson had two runs, four hits and one RBI. Eric Bruntlett had one run and two hits while Pettitte, Adam Everette and Willy Taveras each had one RBI for the Astros as Houston (25-23) lost its third straight game.

Pettitte dropped to 3-6 with the loss.
