STRASBOURG, France, May 23 (UPI) -- Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy and defending champion Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain were among Tuesday's opening-round winners at the Strasbourg International.
Dechy, seeded third, beat Chinese Zi Yan 6-2, 6-1, and fourth-seeded Medina Garrigues won her sixth straight match in Strasbourg by trouncing American Amy Frazier 6-1, 6-1.
Three other seeds advanced on Day 2, as No. 2 Marion Bartoli of France beat Slovakian qualifier Jarmila Gajdosova 6-0, 7-6 (7-1); No. 7 Jie Zheng overcame qualifier and fellow Chinese Meng Yuan 4-6, 6-4, 6-2; and No. 8 Serb Jelena Jankovic got past Sybille Bammer 6-5, as the Austrian retired in the first set.
In an upset, Chinese Shuai Peng defeated sixth-seeded Argentine Gisela Dulko 6-2, 6-3.
