CINCINNATI, May 14 (UPI) -- Ryan Howard hit two home runs Sunday to help Philadelphia beat the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1, in 12 innings.
Howard, who did not make his regular start at first base because of stomach virus, also hit a game-tying solo home run in the top of the eighth as a pinch-hitter. Both Howard and Shane Victorino had two hits for the Phillies (22-15), who are the first team to sweep the Reds this season.
Philadelphia has won 13 of its last 14 games.
In relief, the winning pitcher was Geoff Geary (1-0). Tom Gordon earned his 13th save.
Jason LaRue drove in the only Cincinnati run with a solo homer in the fifth inning, and Scott Hatteberg had three hits for the Reds (23-15), who have dropped four of their last six games.
The loser was Chris Hammond (0-1).
