Canada, Finland among winners at Latvia

RIGA, Latvia, May 10 (UPI) -- Brendan Shanahan's third-period goal Wednesday gave Canada a 2-1 win over the United States in 2006 World Ice Hockey Championship at Riga, Latvia.

Pittsburgh Penguins rookie sensation Sidney Crosby scored Canada's other goal in the preliminary round game. Phil Kessel scored the lone U.S. goal in a 2-on-1 rush with 6:07 left in the first period.

The victory gave Canada the top spot in Group D.

Norway advanced to the qualifying round with a 6-3 pounding of Denmark.

The United States had already moved into the next round with earlier victories over Norway.

Denmark will play Finland Thursday. Finland grabbed the top spot in Group A, despite a 3-3 tie against the Czech Republic.

The Czech squad has advanced in Group A and will face Norway on Thursday.

Russia won Group C. Sweden captured Group B.
