BERLIN, May 9 (UPI) -- Former champion Martina Hingis highlighted Tuesday's first-round winners at the $1.34 million German Open tennis tournament in Berlin.
The unseeded Hingis ousted 11th-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta 7-5, 6-3, on the red clay at LTTC Rot-Weiss. The former world No. 1 Swiss captured this French Open tune-up in 1999.
Hingis' second-round opponent will be German Julia Schruff.
Four other seeds saw action on Day 2 in Berlin and three were eliminated in upsets.
Spanish qualifier Laura Pous Tio leveled ninth-seeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva 6-4, 6-3, while last week's Estoril runner-up Na Li of China knocked out 12th-seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic, who retired with a left hamstring injury after dropping the first set 1-6. The other upset occurred when China's Jie Zheng took out 13th-seeded Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Zheng is fresh off her title in Estoril, where she beat Li in a rare all-Chinese final.
Sixteenth-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues avoided the upset bug by pasting Russian qualifier Tatiana Panova 6-1, 6-2.
The 2006 Berlin titlist will collect $196,900. The top seed is Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo, who will open against Russian Vera Dushevina.
