Davydenko beats Safin at Estoril

ESTORIL, Portugal, May 3 (UPI) -- Nikolay Davydenko of Russia beat Marat Safin, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the clay-court Estoril Open in Estoril, Portugal.

It marked the first time in his career that Davydenko had beaten his fellow countryman in three meetings.

Davydenko, who is the tournament's second seed, is No. 9 in the latest world rankings. The injury-plagued Safin is a former No. 1 but is unranked in the latest top 50.

Elsewhere, unseeded Albert Portas of Spain beat No. 4 Gael Monfils of France, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4; unseeded Justin Gimelstob of the United States topped No. 7 Nicolas Massu of Chile, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4; and Giles Muller of Luxembourg beat Nicholas Lapentti of Ecuador, 6-1, 6-4.

The tournament's eventual winner will claim a titlist check of $93,000.
