Coria, Ancic, Haas lose in Munich

MUNICH, Germany, May 2 (UPI) -- Top seeds Argentine Guillermo Coria and Croat Mario Ancic were first-round upset victims Tuesday at the BMW Open in Germany.

German qualifier Denis Gremelmayr defeated top-seeded Coria 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, and German Philipp Kohlschreiber beat second-seeded Ancic 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5).

Fourth-seeded German Tommy Haas also was upset, losing to 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Haas was the 2000 Munich runner-up.

Also, Austrian Jurgen Melzer defeated seventh-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-4 and Swede Robin Soderling beat eighth-seeded Frenchman Florent Serra 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-4.

No. 3 Finn Jarkko Nieminen escaped an upset when he beat 2005 Munich runner-up Andrei Pavel 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (9-7). No. 5 Belgian Olivier Rochus defeated Brazilian lucky-loser Julio Silva 6-2, 6-3.
