CANBERRA, Australia, April 25 (UPI) -- More than two dozen African and Asian athletes who participated in the Commonwealth Games have asked for asylum in Australia.

The 26 asylum-seekers are among 126 athletes from Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Cameroon who have overstayed their visas, the Australian reported.

Fourteen of the asylum-seekers are from Sierra Leone, including three young women who said they were fearful of returning home because of traditional female circumcision practices.
