U.S. team takes 2-0 lead over Germans

ETTENHEIM, Germany, April 22 (UPI) -- The United States used two little-known players Saturday to take a 2-0 lead over Germany in the Federation Cup at Ettenheim.

Jamea Jackson beat world No. 14 Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, and Jill Craybas topped Julia Schruff, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. The U.S. needs only to win one of Sunday's reverse singles matches to claim victory.

Craybas is the top U.S. player in the absence of Lindsay Davenport and the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, who all are nursing injuries.

On Sunday, Craybas will face Groenefeld, but Jackson likely will play Martina Mueller, as Schruff is hampered by a calf injury.

In other battles, Spain leads Austria, 2-0; Russia is tied with Belgium,1-1; and France is tied with Italy, 1-1.
