Blue Jays put Burnett on the DL

TORONTO, April 22 (UPI) -- The Toronto Blue Jays Saturday placed veteran right-hander A.J. Burnett on the 15-day disabled list because of a right-elbow injury.

He was forced to leave Friday night's 7-6, 12-inning win over Boston with discomfort in the elbow.

Burnett -- in the first year of a five-year, $55 million contract after three seasons with the Florida Marlins -- experienced similar pain in spring training, the result of scar tissue from elbow surgery earlier in his career. He has had three MRI this year.

"We're doing everything we're supposed to do medically," said general manager J.P. Ricciardi on the Blue Jays' Web site. "If the guy tells you he's hurt, you have to respect that. You've got to go with it, but we're not alarmed."

Burnett, who is 0-1 after two starts this season, is scheduled to visit noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., in the near future.
