SEATTLE, April 20 (UPI) -- Ray Allen hit seven 3-point shots, setting an NBA season record for 3-pointers, pacing the Seattle SuperSonics to a 109-98 victory over the Denver Nuggets.
Allen's barrage Wednesday was one of the few highlights in the season for the Sonics, who ended with a 35-47 record. Denver, 44-38 in the regular season, won its division and meets the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the NBA playoffs.
Allen made 269 3-point shots on the year, breaking the mark set by Dennis Scott in 1995-96. Allen came out shooting for the record, making five of his 3-pointers in the first period.
Denver, which didn't play many of its starters, used a 9-0 run in the fourth period to get within 97-93, but Seattle's Nick Collison dropped in a lay-up and Linas Kleiza hit two free throws to keep the Nuggets at length.
Allen, who was 7-of-13 from 3-point range, finished with 27 points while Seattle's Like Ridnour and Rashard Lewis each chipped in 15 points.
DerMarr Johnson led Denver with 22 points while Kleiza added 17.
