CHARLESTON, S.C., April 13 (UPI) -- Nadia Petrova Wednesday night avoided an upset against Alona Bondarenko in the second round of the Family Circle Cup at Charleston, S.C.
Petrova from Russia, the second seed, was a 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 winner over Bondarenko, a native of the Ukraine; fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova beat wild card Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States, 6-0, 6-1; No. 8 Nathalie Dechy of France topped Anna Tatishvili, 7-5, 6-4; sixth-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany beat Virginia Ruano-Pascual of Spain, 6-1, 6-4; and ninth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain stopped wild card Neha Uberoi of the U.S., 6-3, 6-4.
Kuznetsova, who beat Maria Sharapova in an all-Russian final at the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami two weeks ago and made the semifinals at last week's clay-court event at Amelia Island, Fla., rose to 20-5 this season.
