NHL: Minnesota 5, Colorado 2

DENVER, April 10 (UPI) -- Marian Gaborik scored three goals helping the Minnesota Wild to a 5-2 victory over Colorado, keeping the Avalanche from solidifying its playoff spot.

Colorado is in sixth place in the NHL Western Conference, but San Jose and Edmonton are tied for seventh just 1 point back and ninth-place Toronto is 3 points back. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

Minnesota, out of the playoff picture, scored four times before Colorado got on the board with Gaborik getting the game's first goal 4:35 into the contest. Less than a minute, later the Wild was up 2-0 after Pascal Dupuis scored, a goal that chased Colorado goalie Peter Budaj from the game.

Daniel Tjarnqvist made it 3-0 in the second period and Gaborik's second goal was worth a 4-0 Minnesota lead early in the second period.

Wild goalie Manny Fernandez finished with 40 saves and didn't allow a goal until John-Michael Lilies' score midway through the third period, but Gaborik completed his second career hat trick 24 seconds later to again make it a 4-goal difference. Colorado got a final goal from Cody McCormick.
