RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif., April 9 (UPI) -- The United States Sunday advanced to the 2006 Davis Cup semifinals when Andy Roddick beat Fernando Gonzalez, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2, at Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Roddick, who beat Nicolas Massu in three sets on Friday, avenged James Blake's loss to Gonzalez in the opening match of the quarterfinal against Chile.
The United States was captained this weekend by former Roddick coach Dean Goldfine, as Patrick McEnroe was unavailable because his wife was expected to go into labor.
With its insurmountable 3-1 advantage, the United States moves on to face Russia at Moscow in the semifinals from Sept. 22-24. Russia beat France, 3-2.
