MLB: Detroit 7, Texas 0

ARLINGTON, Texas, April 9 (UPI) -- Chris Shelton was 3-for-4 with two triples and three RBI Saturday night as Detroit beat the Texas Rangers, 7-0, to remain unbeaten after five games.

It is the first time the Tigers started a season 5-0 since 1985.

Curtis Granderson hit a two-run homer in the seventh; while Magglio Ordonez went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Winner Justin Verlander (1-0), Detroit's second overall pick in the 2004 draft, yielded just two hits in seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Texas (1-5) managed only two hits against Verlander and relievers Chris Spurling and Bobby Seay.

The loser was Texas starter Kevin Millwood (0-2).

Texas has lost five in a row after winning its first game of the season.
