SEATTLE, April 8 (UPI) -- Felix Hernandez struggled in his season debut on the mound as the Mariners lost to the A's 5-0 Friday night at Safeco Field.

Hernandez, who turned 20 Saturday, struck out four batters, walked four and hit one during the 100 pitches he threw in five innings. He also gave up two hits and one run.

Hernandez has been suffering shin splints since his last game, a Cactus League match-up March 23 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in which he struck out eight batters in five innings, the Mariners' Web site reports.
