Cleveland State hires Gary Waters

CLEVELAND, April 6 (UPI) -- Gary Waters, who was fired by Rutgers last month, was hired Thursday as the new men's basketball coach at Cleveland State University.

He succeeds Mike Garland, who resigned March 31 after the Vikings were only 10-18 this past season, including 5-11 in the Horizon League.

"Gary is respected around the country for his accomplishments on the court, and once the fans in Northeast Ohio get to know him as a person, they will be equally as impressed with his character and personality," said CSU Athletic Director Lee Reed on the school's Web site. "He is an experienced Division I basketball coach who has shown the ability to get the most out of his players and take programs to the next level."

Before going to Rutgers, Waters, 54, was 92-60 in five years at Kent State, where his teams went to the NCAA Tournament in the 1998-99 and 2000-01 seasons. His overall record is 171-135.
