Augustus No. 1 pick in WNBA Draft

BOSTON, April 5 (UPI) -- All-America guard Seimone Augustus of LSU Wednesday was selected by the Minnesota Lynx with the top pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft.

The 6-foot-1 inch native of Baton Rouge was named the National Player of the Year, SEC Player of the Year and Naismith Player of the Year for this past season. She averaged 22.7 points per game and shot 56.1 percent from the floor, helping the Tigers qualify for the NCAA Tournament's Women's Final Four for the third straight season.

Her per game scoring average in four years was 19.3 points.

"This is a dream come true for me," Augustus said on the school's Web site. "I am just happy to be able to continue playing basketball and I am grateful the WNBA has given me this opportunity."

With the second overall pick, Phoenix took Cappie Pondexter from Rutgers. Charlotte chose Duke guard Monique Currie and Baylor forward Sophia Young was selected fourth by San Antonio.
