PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico, March 31 (UPI) -- Scott Simpson is the leader after the first round of the inaugural Puerto Vallarta Blue Agave Golf Classic on the Champions Tour at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Simpson opened with a 5-under-par 67 Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Gil Morgan and David Eger, who both shot 4-under 68.
"I played really well," Simpson said. "I got a couple of breaks where I missed a couple of bunkers. I didn't have any bogeys, which is a good thing, and I putted well."
Six players share fourth place at 3-under 69. That group includes Mark Johnson, Allen Doyle, Gary McCord, Dan Pohl, Gary Robison and 2002 U.S. Senior Open winner Don Pooley.
Simpson is looking for his first Champions Tour win while Morgan has 23 Champions Tour titles and Eger has two. Hale Irwin, the all-time wins leader on the Champions Tour, shot 2-under 70 and is tied with five others.
