Ochoa maintains big lead at Rancho Mirage

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif., March 31 (UPI) -- Lorena Ochoa held the lead through 36 holes of the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship at Rancho Mirage, Calif., Friday.

She followed her course-record 62 on Thursday with a 1-under 71.

At 11-under 133, Ochoa -- whose 36-hole score is a record for the event -- has a four-stroke lead over 16-year-old Michelle Wie, who also shot 71 on Friday, and stands at 7-under 137.

Juli Inkster set the previous record of 135 in 1989. Brandie Burton tied it in 1996 and Meg Mallon matched it in 1999.

Karrie Webb, the 2000 champion, shot 4-under 68 Friday and shares third place at 6-under 138 with Seon-Hwa Lee (69).

Annika Sorenstam, the world's No. 1 women's player, could only manage 72 on Friday and is at 1-under-par 143. She shares 12th place with Karen Stupples.

Among those failing to make the 7-over 150 cut were Amy Alcott and Patty Sheehan.
