Van de Velde leads Madeira Island Open

MADEIRA, Portugal, March 25 (UPI) -- Jean Van de Velde shot a 1-under 71 Saturday to take a two-shot lead going into the final round of the Madeira Island Open.

The Frenchman stands at 11-under 205. Pedro Linhart of Spain, who won this event in 1999, shot a 69 Saturday and was alone in second place at 207.

Jarmo Sandelin, who shared the overnight lead with Van de Velde at 10-under, dropped into a tie for third place with a 74. He was joined at 208 by Damien McGrane (71), Simon Wakefield (68) and Lee Slattery (66).

Each of the last three times Van de Velde has held at least a share of the lead after three rounds, he has finished a runner-up. That includes the 1999 British Open and last year's Open de France, in which the second-place finish helped him re-gain his tour card.
