Two former Cowboys join new teams

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 24 (UPI) -- Two star players recently cut by the Dallas Cowboys landed with new teams Friday -- one with San Francisco and the other with Carolina.

Guard Larry Allen, a 10-time Pro Bowl selection and a likely future Hall of Famer, signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Receiver Keyshawn Johnson joined the Carolina Panthers.

Both Allen and Johnson were released by the Cowboys last week for salary cap purposes. The release of Johnson allowed Dallas to sign controversial receiver Terrell Owens.

Allen was the last link to the Dallas teams that won three Super Bowls in four years.

"We're fortunate to have him," said Scot McCloughan, San Francisco's vice president of player personnel. "He's a powerful guard that gives us a chance to control the line of scrimmage."

Johnson -- who went to the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003 -- said he chose the Panthers in hopes of enjoying playoff success once again.

"I thought this was the best place for me to get back to the Super Bowl," he said.
