COL BKB: Manhattan 87, Maryland 84

COLLEGE PARK, Md., March 18 (UPI) -- With Jeff Xavier scoring 31 points, Manhattan beat Maryland Saturday, 87-84, in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at College Park.

Xavier added eight rebounds and three steals to his game-high scoring total.

Jason Wingate had 21 points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists; Arturo Dubois had 12 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots; and Kenny Minor added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Jaspers (20-10), who staved off a late rally to advance to a second-round contest against Old Dominion on Monday night.

Travis Garrison had 21 points and 12 rebounds; Ekene Ibekwe had 15 points and 10 rebounds; Nik Caner-Medley added 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals; Mike Jones had 11 points and two rebounds; D.J. Strawberry had 10 points, three assists and three rebounds; and James Gist blocked five shots for the Terrapins, who finished at 19-13.
