Hewitt wins Pac Life second-rounder

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- Two-time winner Lleyton Hewitt led Monday's second-round winners at the $2.725 million Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells, Calif.

Hewitt posted a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-4 victory over former top-10 German Rainer Schuettler.

Last year's Indian Wells runner-up to Roger Federer, Hewitt won this hardcourt tournament back-to-back in 2002 and 2003.

Two-time runner-up Tim Henman lost to Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 64. Henman reached Pac Life finals in 2002 and 2004. Berdych, who won a Masters Series event in Paris last season, will play former world No. 1 Hewitt in the third round.

Second-sound upsets saw Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu beat German Nicolas Kiefer 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-2 and Belgian Xavier Malisse beat Czech Radek Stepanek 6-1, 6-1.
