Woods, who withdrew from the Nissan Open last week because of the flu, had birdies on the first six holes on to go 6-up and never looked back.

"It's been a while since I played one like that," said Woods, a two-time winner of the event. "I hit a bunch of good golf shots today. I hit the ball that way all day."

Woods, the No. 1 seed in the Bobby Jones bracket, will meet No. 8 Robert Allenby in the second round. Allenby beat K.J. Choi, 3 & 2.

For the ninth time in tournament history, a one seed fell to a No. 16 as Ernie Els was beaten by Bernhard Langer.

Els was No. 1 in the Hogan bracket.
