NEW YORK, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- The Orlando Magic Wednesday traded guard Steve Francis to the New York Knicks for aging guard Penny Hardaway and second-year forward Trevor Ariza.
The deal gives the Knicks a potentially potent starting back-court with Stephon Marbury. Jamal Crawford comes off the bench. It is the second mega-deal made by President Isiah Thomas this month, as he continues an in-season team overhaul.
"This is a trade that we all feel makes us a better basketball team for both now and in the future," Thomas said. "In Steve, we add an all-star caliber player to our team without giving up core assets."
Earlier this month, Thomas acquired swingman Jalen Rose from Toronto for center/forward Antonio Davis.
Francis, a three-time all-star, had become a malcontent in Orlando. He is averaging 16.2 points, 5.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 46 games. He is in his seventh NBA season out of Maryland and also has played for Houston.
