OSU's Sutton charged with drunken driving

STILLWATER, Okla., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Prosecutors in Stillwater, Okla., have charged Oklahoma State University men's basketball coach Eddie Sutton with drunken driving.

The DUI charge, plus speeding and driving over the centerline, came a week Sutton was involved in the car accident and days after he publicly admitted an alcohol problem.

Sutton had a blood alcohol level of 0.22 Feb. 10 when he hit another car, the Sports Network reports.

Sutton, OSU's head basketball coach for 16 seasons, is on medical leave for the rest of this season to recover from injuries from the accident as well as to seek help for his alcohol addiction.

The 69-year-old admitted publicly Wednesday he had a drinking problem and apologized.

He also said that he had taken pain pills for a chronic back and hip injury before drinking last Friday. He said the pain was overwhelming.

Sutton could face up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. His son, Sean, is interim coach.

Sutton is the fifth winningest coach in Division I men's basketball with a 794-311 record.
