TURIN, Italy, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Switzerland and Slovakia created huge Olympic hockey upsets Saturday in a display of the sport's international parity.
The Swiss stunned Canada, 2-0, behind the goaltending of Martin Gerber -- who made 49 saves, 24 of them in the final period.
Elsewhere in the tournament Saturday, Russia fought off Kazakhstan, 1-0; Germany and Italy skated to a 3-3 tie; Sweden overwhelmed Latvia, 6-1; and Finland downed the Czech Republic, 4-2.
Slovakia leads Group B at 3-0 while Russia and Sweden are 2-1. The Americans are 1-1-1 and if neither Latvia (0-2-1) nor Kazakhstan (0-3) win another game, the U.S. team will not need another victory to make the quarterfinals. The top four from each group reach the medal round.
Finland (3-0), with just two goals allowed, has a one-game lead over Canada and Switzerland in Group A.
