Basketball Hall nominees announced

HOUSTON, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Charles Barkley Friday headed the list of 2006 nominees for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Barkley, who was on the ballot for the first time, averaged 22.1 points and 11.7 rebounds per game in 16 NBA seasons, was elected to 11 All-Star games, won an Olympic gold medal in 1992 and was MVP in 1993.

Also on the ballot were Connecticut women's coach Geno Auriemma, sportscaster Dick Vitale, Adrian Dantley, Chet Walker, former coach and Naismith chairman David Gavitt, Purdue head coach Gene Keady, former player and three-time coach of the year Don Nelson, former No.1 overall draft pick Ralph Sampson, Spanish coach Pedro Ferrandiz, Italy coach Sandro Gamba; player John Issacs; former St. Louis Hawks owner Ben Kerner from the Veterans Screening Committee and Van Chancellor, who guided the WNBA's Houston Comets to four straight championships (1997-2000) and won 439 games as women's coach at Mississippi (1978-1997).
