STILLWATER, Okla., Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Oklahoma State University basketball coach Eddie Sutton reportedly had taken pain pills prior to having a car accident.

Speaking via telephone at a news conference Wednesday, Sutton said his back pain from an injury in 2004 was so intense on Friday he took several pain pills and "succumbed to temptation" and "bought a bottle," reports KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City.

Sutton, head coach at Oklahoma State since 1990, apologized to Teresa Barnard, who was in another vehicle involved in Friday's accident. A police report said Barnard said she was injured and was on medication, and that the accident caused $18,000 damage to her vehicle.

Oklahoma State President David Schmidly expressed support for Sutton. He also said the administration would discuss Sutton's status with him after the coach has undergone treatment. Until then, Sutton's son Sean will take over the coaching duties, the report said.
