COLORADO SPRINGS, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Former NBA coach Rudy Tomjanovich Wednesday was named director of scouting for USA Men's Basketball.
Tomjanovich, who was head coach of the 2000 Olympic squad, formerly coached the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers, compiling a record of 525-416 in 13 seasons. He guided the Rockets to back-to-back NBA titles in 1994 and 1995.
"By selecting Rudy, we are getting someone who brings impressive credentials. His accomplishments as a NBA player, NBA head coach and as a USA Basketball head coach are tremendous," said Jerry Colangelo, managing director of USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team.
As a player, Tomjanovich, who has bladder cancer, was involved in all four Rockets divisional championships, was Houston's leading scorer in the 1976-77 season, and is the third leading scorer in franchise history with 13,383 points, trailing Hakeem Olajuwon and Calvin Murphy. He stepped down from the Lakers on Feb. 2, 2005.
Team USA will be coached by Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.
