Neither Van Pelt nor Smith has ever finished higher than third in a PGA Tour event.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson carded a 2-under 69 and is tied for 26th place with 2002 winner Chris DiMarco, two-time runner-up Justin Leonard and 1999 champion Rocco Mediate among others.

The round was called late in the day because of darkness, with four players left on the course.
