Hidalgo, 28, is playing for the first time this season. Gaudio, the 2004 French Open champion, beat Fernando Gonzalez in last year's final on the way to five clay-court titles in 2005.

Albert Montanes and Carlos Cuadrado also own their matches Wednesday.

Gonzalez, the second seed, will face Juan Martin del Potro, and Montanes plays Cuadrado Thursday.

Gonzalez captured this event in 2002 and 2004. The tournament's winner will claim $52,500.
