Brodeur signs big contract extension

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has signed a multi-year contract extension worth more than $31 million.

Brodeur, 33, one of the NHL's best goalies, is 24-15-4 this season with a 2.55 goals-against average, a .909 saves percentage, and four shutouts. The Bergen Record reported Brodeur was willing to take less money now in exchange for more when he gets older and long-term security -- and was willing to be flexible so interim coach Lou Lamoriello would have more room under the salary cap.

"I'm real happy, very excited," Brodeur told the newspaper. "It's a great opportunity for me to end my career here and stay close to my kids. That was my huge concern going forward with the new league. I was able to do that."

The Montreal native has a career record of 427-233-105-4 in 784 games, all with the Devils, since entering the NHL in the 1991-92 season.
