Former player Carlos Martinez dies at 40

CARACAS, Venezuela, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Seven-year Major League Baseball veteran Carlos Martinez has died in his home in Venezuela, El Universal newspaper reported Thursday.

He was 40.

Martinez played infield and on occasion, designated hitter for the White Sox from 1988-90; for the Indians from 1991-93, and for the Angels in 1995.

His wife declined to tell reporters what caused his death only saying he had suffered from an illness dating back to his playing days.

Martinez died at his home 12 miles north of the capital, Caracas.
